I have a large basement room (550 sq.ft.) that’s used as a den/TV-room It has a fireplace that’s used often in winter, and fresh air circulation is not good In sum, the room suffers from fireplace (and other) odors, plus the general musty smell that often comes with poorly ventilated basement rooms. Suffice it to say that I needed something to make the air fresher and cleaner, and I went shopping for an air purifier. The Surround Air XJ-3000C was my choice and, after 9 months of use, it has proved to be a good selection.

Purifiers aren’t works of art and this one isn’t exactly gorgeous, but the controls are intuitive and servicing the filters isn’t a major hassle (though replacements aren’t inexpensive). The Ionizer can be operated at any of three levels of intensity, or turned off. Since ionized air in a confined space isn’t healthy above a certain level, I use it at the “Low” setting when I’m in the room. It has a timer switch (with 1, 2, or 4 hour settings), which permits me to set the ionizer on “High” when I’m away from home — which does an excellent job of deodorizing the room after a weekend of heavy fireplace use.

The filtration seems to work well because the filters catch lots of airborne dust, etc. I vacuum the air-intake filter, but don’t know how much that helps. I’ve noticed that the room now requires less frequent dusting. During hay fever season, my symptoms are significantly reduced when I’m in the room with the Surround Air purifier, occasionally sleeping in the room for this reason.

Some air purifiers can be a bit noisy, but this one - even at the high-fan setting - is barely noticeable (though not inaudible). Others have complained that this machine is poorly constructed, but I have had no problems with my unit. The ionizer bulb didn’t function when I purchased it at a nearby store, but the merchant immediately provided a replacement bulb that was easy to install. Overall, the Surround Air XJ-3000C has done exactly what I wanted it to do. For me, it has been unobtrusively effective.
