We bought this negative ion generator to try to help with my wife’s asthma/allergies. We had borrowed an XJ-2000 model and it seemed to work quiet well to relieve symptoms.

I have looked up the actual ability for air cleaning using ionizers on the internet and have found equally compelling arguments for and against. (As well, equally by volume of arguments/testimonies). I’m not 100% convinced that it helps, but by my wife’s reactions, it seems to definitely work.

The first one arrived without working. So after it was sent back, the 2nd one worked. Another reviewed had mentioned there is some kind of reset switch behind the back panel. (So this seems to be a common problem with this model).

The fan is incredibly noisy when turned on. Thankfully, there is an independent switch on the unit, so it can operate without the fan on. It seems like a cheap PC case fan. I wonder if it can be replaced by an ultra-quiet PC case fan…

After looking at the ozone rating, it is a low level, so in a medium sized room, would be lower than outside ozone levels. Ozone is bad for the respiratory system, but is a unwanted by-product of ionizers.

It does trap dust on the metal plates, and you can tell when it needs to be cleaned, because it makes a loud crackling noise when it gets dirty. Otherwise it’s a nice quiet sizzling type sound.

UPDATE: After 1.5 years, it just stopped working. The on/off switch no longer turns it on. I tried poking the “kill” switch at the back when the rear panel is pulled off, but it still doesn’t work.
