Reviews on Surround Air XJ-2000 Air Purifier Solid value I really wanted to buy the Ionic Breeze Quadra from Sharper Image, but that price! $350 seemed waaay too steep. When I discovered the XJ20...

I’m not sure why anybody would rate this product 5 stars. Either they don’t have any other basis for comparison or they have some other motivation which is beside me. This is one of those “you get what you pay for” purchases.

Someone already mentioned the ozone, and I’m here to tell you, it is not a pleasant smell. It supposedly has “high and low” settings, but these don’t work the way you would think. “Low” only makes the ionizer run intermittently (on for a few minutes, then off for a few minutes). It doesn’t really “lower” the amount that it outputs. What’s the point of that?

Cleaning is a hassle. They make it seem easy, but you have to unscrew this hatch on the bottom, yank out this weird plate arrangement, and clean it. The gunk on those plates does NOT clean easily. And really, the plates are pretty small. I can’t imagine that it actually gets more than a small amount of the pollution on those little plates. If it did, you’d probably have to clean it twice a day or more.

It doesn’t really seem to cover much space, even though they claim “up to 500 square feet” (and there is reason to question that but I’ll get to it in a minute). I still had plenty of dust in my room even with it running regularly.

The product itself is made mostly of cheaper plastic, and it looks like an old-timey clock radio. It is very small in size. It is not particularly attractive.

I noticed that many other people are selling what appear to be the same ionizers for much less on ebay. Apparently, these are all imported from the same place in China and they just put different labels on them. A friend of mine bought one of these on eBay, even though I suggested he should get a different product altogether. I looked at it and I couldn’t tell any difference between it and my product, and my friend paid a lot less than I did, which was annoying (but my own fault). Another reviewer mentioned they thought there might be a difference in the models sold on eBay, such as the plates being different, but they both use steel plates and appear completely identical in every respect). In fact, the eBay sellers will tell you they all come out of the exact same factory, so that should tell you something. Lesson here is do your shopping and be careful you don’t overpay for something you can get cheaper elsewhere.

One other thing I realized and should note is an odd discrepancy with the amount of space this thing is claimed to cover. claims up to 500 square feet can be covered. The Chinese manufacturer’s own printed instruction booklet (which comes with the generic machine but does not include) claims that the product can only cover up to 270 square feet. Quite a difference! 270 square feet is not very much. Now, who is to be believed, the manufacturer of the product or someone who puts their label on it and just resells it?

I think if I had gotten this product for about $20-$25 I might not mind so much, it’s just that I don’t think it’s really worth much more than that. After I bought mine, I noticed they kept changing the price up and down, I guess to see what they could get people to pay for it. I saw recently that they had even TRIPLED the price to around $150 for it. After seeing that stuff, I would never buy from them again. Instead, I would seriously encourage people to buy from a large, name brand company if they need a good air cleaner.
