I used to own a honeywell electrostatic precipitator simillar to the freidrich c90-b; good cleaning power but high maintenance and alot of ozone - i sold it and years later decided to look into air cleaners again. I have allergies and asthma. I used consummer reports for some general info but you need to understand their ranking method which is overly simplified (see end) and doesn’t take many factors into consideration. What i look for in an air cleaner is capability, quietness, features, energy efficiency in cadr/watt, cost and maintenace, and what room size i will need it for. capablity is not so good if the enrgy consumption is expensive so i look for energy star rated units http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=room_airclean.room_airclean that have a rating in the 4 to 15 range throughout their operating range. energy star ratings only list highest speed efficiency- so you need to count the efficiency on other speeds as well - i rarely operate the FP-N60CX on maximun so i get a cadr/watt of between 9(medium speed) and 6(high speed) usually - very good!
the sharp plasmacluster air cleaners are very capable.They use hybrid technologies including top quality energy efficient ultra quiet dc motors ( cheap units use noisy energy hogging huming ac motors - most inexpensive commercial brands),washable activated carbon (removes volatile chemicals, gases, and odors -important), hepa filtration, and advanced Plasma Cluster technology which generates and - oxygen and hydrogen ions by spliting water molecules from the air

without generating ozone - and newer models emit 2x the ions.
i love the remote as i can lower the speed to medium from bed to sleep . The plasma technology really is effective; lots of washable carbon. i vacuum the hepa filter and even add a layer of filtret electrostatic window ac filter media to the prefilter to keep dust out of the hepa filter

It helps me with my allergies and asthma.
here’s why consumer reports gave it low scores:
they don’t test for odors voc/gases capability.
excellent ratings for particle removal are only based on cadr rates above 300cfm not overall cadr/watt efficiencies. room size use is not taken into consideration. in quiet mode or monitor mode machine acts as sniffer testing air quality so cadr is lowest giving it a poor cleaning score. medium is really low speed and has a cadr/watt of 9 - over twice as efficient as its top rated model.
they also don’t consider plasmacluster technology.
