Ok, I had an older model Sharper Image Quadra purifier, which caused me some throat irritation. I Bought 2 Oreck XL air purifiers because of all the advertising and give-aways and noticed at first cleaning after a week 24/7 on high speed practically no dust visible on grids or when rinsed. Bought Oreck foam cleaner at local store and followed instructions to the letter. After another 24/7 week, same poor result. Sharper Image was not working properly(one of the indicator lamps burned out) and they replaced it(no questions asked) with the new model Quadra with the ozone guard mounted on the front. Cleaned all three units, 1 Sharper Image Quadra and 2 Oreck XL’s and placed them in the same family room for a 24/7 week, all on high. Had to turn up the TV volume because of the noise from the Orecks. Everyday I moved the 3 cleaners around the room exchanging positions. After 4 days the Sharper Image Quadra got so dirty the clean warning light came on. The pollen season has already started here in the South. The Quadra was completely coated with dust on the grids. The Orecks were still as clean as when the test started? I cleaned the Sharper Image unit only, and returned it to the test as before. By the way, the ION throat irritation problem seems to have been solved with the new Sharper Image Quadra with the ozone guard. At the end of the 24/7 test the Orecks were barely dirty at all and the Sharper Image had to be cleaned again? I also noticed the Orecks do a great job of just moving dust around the room. I could see the dust in the dark with a flashlight coming out of the Oreck? I guess thats why no dust showed up on the collectors plates of the Oreck.
I’m going to try and return the Orecks for refund and buy another Sharper Image Quadra. I’ve been told Oreck has a 90 day return/refund limit. I will update this review if I have problems returning the Orecks’.
Has anyone else experienced these type of test results between the Oreck XL’s and the Sharper Image Quadra units or any other air cleaners? Why does Oreck not mention you need to replace the $expensive$ pre-filters and carbon filters at least every three months in their Ads. By the way, even the pre-filter never got very dusty. It cost $4 per unit to use the foam cleaner one time. My mother also has two Orecks and they simply don’t clean the air as advertised.
I feel I performed a valid test, especially since it was 2 Orecks vs 1 Sharper Image. I just thought people should hear of my experience with these cleaner/purifiers. Any comments appreciated.
