I have had very bad allergies for about 12 years now, and after repeatedly trying every allergy medication in existence, I saw an ad for the Oreck Air Purifier. I’d been doing some research on the Sharper Image purifiers and was not impressed, with the reviews or the price.
I found the Oreck to be a much better value, and the reviews were much better than the other no filters to buy type purifiers. The deal I got was buy one get one half off plus an electric broom and a purifier for the fridge. On a side note, the broom and fridge purifier was a very nice perk, both work well, but I don’t personally feel that they would be worth purchasing separately, the price is a little steep.
So, I placed my order and in a few weeks got my shipment. I unpacked everything and read all the instructions. I then put one in my living room and one in my bedroom. There are 3 settings, high, medium and silent. I use medium for the living room area and silent for the bedroom. Silent is really silent and the fan is still moving a sufficient amount of air. Medium is a bit louder, but tolerable in a high traffic environment where there are other noises anyway. I can’t really justify using the High setting unless you’re having a party at your house or something that would cause sufficient racket anyway.
There is a collection grid inside the unit, and it’s my understanding that the fan sucks in the air over the collection grid and spits the fresh air out the top of the device. In addition to the 4 collection plates there is a carbon filter and a ‘pre’ filter (which is just a screen to catch larger particles). There is also a fragrance drawer which will fill your house with whatever scent you’d like, I haven’t used mine yet, and don’t plan too, I’m very picky about scents and would rather stick to my plug in that utilizes a scent that I know I like. It also has an ionization switch, mine is on, but I’m not sure what it’s supposed to do, negatively charge the air, I think, which is supposed to purify the air even more.
Upon having my machines plugged in for a few hours, I didn’t really notice anything different. The first night however, I did notice that I slept more soundly. No waking up sneezing and no sore throat from having to breathe through my mouth all night. But the real difference was when I went to work and started sneezing as soon as I sat down at my desk. I found myself wishing for my house since I hadn’t sneezed for over a day by that time. Once I did get home, I found that my breathing began to clear up fairly soon after walking into the house. After about an hour of being home, I had settled in and felt comfortable. After about a week, I took the filters and everything out just to see if anything had been collected or if it was just me wanting them to work so bad, but my goodness the black crap that came off the grids and filters after only a week was really disgusting. For the first month, I cleaned them once a week, now I can get away with about once a month.
I’ve had my purifiers for about 2 years now, and am quite happy with them. Considering what they’ve done for me, I think they were definitely worth the money.
But I do have to say that it’s not all smiles with these things. Cleaning them is ridiculous. Yes, most of the gunk comes off with a nice hot spray of water, but there is constantly a black film left on the plates of the collection cell. The other 2 filters clean just fine mainly because they can be removed from the cell for cleaning. The top of the air purifier where the cleaned air is sent back into the room, is impossible to clean, there is a screen that gets clogged up and the little grate covers (they are like the air directionals that are in the car, separate slats that move) get that light black film on them plus they collect dust and such, but even with a q-tip I can’t really clean them well at all. The best luck I’ve had is to take the crevice tool from my vacuum cleaner and get most of the dust out that way. I will say that sending the removable parts of the purifier (the front grate that covers the cell, the 2 filters and the cell itself) through the dishwasher has given me the best results. I’ve tried it with soap and without, both giving me pretty much the same results. It was cleaner than just using the shower hose, and I felt better knowing that the dishwasher has sterilizing qualities. But there was still a light black film on the cell plates. I really don’t know what it is compiled of or why it won’t come off, even with dishwashing detergent, but it doesn’t seem to interfere with the purifying process, so I guess I’ll deal. I’ve heard there is some spray cleaner that is supposed to take care of this problem, but I’ve read that it’s very expensive and doesn’t actually work, so I’ll go on without it.
So, to sum it all up, yes it does what it says, it’s not a bad value, but I really hate cleaning it. I mean, what’s the point of cleaning if it doesn’t get completely clean? It’s just one of those things that really bothers me. If I find another purifier with the same reliability that is easier to clean, I will get rid of the Oreck’s. Until then, I’ll keep trying to get rid of that black film. I will keep you informed of my progress.
Good luck with your search,
Jenny
