To be honest, I was swayed by the XL Professional Air Purifier infomercials which is the first time that any infomerical has ever compelled me to buy anything. First, I have allergies that aren’t bad but simply being able to breathe clean air would help alot. Second, I smoke (I know, it’s wrong) but I wanted something that could cut down on the smell in my place.

Ordering the Air Purifier was easy enough. I opted to pay for it up front instead of taking the monthly payments. The operator assured me of two things: the Air Purifier had a warranty and that the Challenge would be honored if I didn’t like the thing, meaning I could send the unit back at no cost to me within 90 days.

The unit arrived promptly after a couple days. Out of the box, it wasn’t that hard to set up and get going. At first, I saw no noticeable difference with it running after a couple hours. The air didn’t smell better nor did I notice a difference in my allegies. Thinking that I had 90 days to return the thing, I decided to let it run for 2 weeks hoping I’d notice a change in the overall air quality of my bedroom. I even started to smoke outside hoping it would help the Air Purifier do it’s thing. I could certainly tell that air was moving through the unit but it didn’t smell any fresher, even with my nose above the outflow.

I cleaned the thing when it indicated it was time to do so. Taking the unit apart to get at the filtration system was easy enough but cleaning the system was not. I noticed that there were large, visible particles of dust and dirt that refused to let go of the filters. made it seem like I simply had to run water over the filters but this is not the case. It took me about an hour to get it “clean”.

After 30 days, the Air Purifier was not working properly. The outflow was weak. I called and they told me to take the unit to one of their service centers, for which they gave me a list of dealers who could fix it. The first two “authorized” service centers told me they don’t handle the Air Purifier. I finally found a dealer that did and they told me that it would be at least 2 weeks before it could be returned to me. After two weeks, I had to call the dealer who informed me that the parts I needed were on order. The parts, it turned out, were the filtration system that were not covered under warranty because, they claimed, I had damaged the unit while cleaning it. I would have to spend at least $200 to get it fixed. No deal, I told them.

I called up and told them that I was not satisfied with the unit, that it was broken and that I simply cleaned the filters to their specification. While I was under the 90 day trial period, they told me, since I was responsible for the damage to the unit they would not honor the Challenge. Many days later, after much fighting with , they agreed to send me a replacement unit at not cost to me. I would simply have to return the original Air Purifier.

So, I went back to the dealer to get the original unit. The dealer said that they had already disposed of or shipped the filtration system back to and that I would have to wait until the new system to arrive before getting the Purifier back. However, since I would be getting a new system, I would have to pay for it. Another week went by during which I had to get to call the dealer so that I wouldn’t have to pay for the repair. Finally, the dealer agreed to give me back my unit with a brand new filtration system that had magically been found in the stock room.

Since that time, I have run the Air Purifier to no noticeable effect. It’s not collecting dust rather then filtering out of the air. Needless to say, do not be fooled by the false claims of the informerical and certainly do not expect to honor any of it’s promised.
