We bought two of these units at the same time as we bought two Oreck vacuum cleaners. Purchase decision was based largely on the perceived credibility of the Oreck TV ads. With a new baby in the house, we thought that having two would be a real plus. One’s in the living room area, the other in the baby’s room.

While the vacuums have performed well, the air purifiers have been nothing but a disappointment. No matter how frequently we clean the “Truman cell” (using Oreck Assail-a-Cell cleaner), the units start arcing (an annoying snapping sound) within hours or, at most, a couple of days of cleaning. Then it’s the cleaning process all over again! And cleaning is no trivial exercise: You have to (1) spray the cleaner all over the cell, (2) let it sit for a couple of minutes, (3) thoroughly rinse and then (4) let it dry completely (takes a couple of hours with a fan blowing on it. As I say, not a trivial exercise, especially knowing you’ll have to do it again in a few days.

We first were told that the initial shipments had a technical defect and so the Oreck store here replaced one. No difference.

Do they purify the air? Well, how can you tell? I don’t believe they’re intended to make your house dust-free, and ours isn’t, so I don’t know if they’re “purifying” the air or not.

All in all, the air purifiers have been an expensive purchasing decision that I really regret.
