I bought both the Ionic Zone IZ-270 and HEPA machine for evaluation before buying more. Here are my observations:

The IZ-270 is small, 8 inches high by 6 inches wide. The air intake area is only 4″ x 4″ and features a removable cartridge. They say to clean once a month but after 1 week I found the white pre-filter and collector plates were already dirty. I have cats and a dusty home, so that didn’t surprise me. I cleaned the pre-filer and carbon filters in water and the collector plates, they’re part of the cartridge so I just put that in the dishwasher per instructions and it did come out clean. The unit was out of commission for about 2 hours while I cleaned the filters and collector plates.

The inside of the unit also had dust, so I cleaned it with a damp rag. I didn’t notice any dust buildup on the kitchen counter where the unit was placed, so I don’t think I have to worry about black wall effect as I did when I used an older ionizer 20 years ago that made a mess on the wall near the unit.

I paid $25 for the IZ-270 and $30 for their HEPA machine, but I don’t have to change the filters in the HEPA machine once a week. It comes with 2 pre-filters I do clean every 2 weeks or so and that’s easy enough. The HEPA replacement filter is only $2.75. That Ionic Zone machine does have a strong fan and does move the air much more than the smaller IZ-270, but the IZ-270 is silent on low (I’ve operated it on low), I don’t hear it at all, and it does collect a lot of dust, but then again, there’s a lot of dust in my air.

I’d have to buy 10 of the IZ-270’s to treat my living areas and clean 10 machines ever week or so. Ten of their machines would only cost me $200, but I don’t want to do the cleaning quite frankly. I’d rather buy a few more of their HEPA machines. I’ve only had their machines a month so I can’t comment on how well built they are. The IZ-270 seems like a simple machine, so as long as I keep it clean, it should work fine for a long time. The HEPA machine seems to be well built and looks nice.

Bottom line, I don’t like to waste money and the price is right with the Ionic Zone’s. I didn’t want to spend hundreds a year for air cleaners and a few hundred up front, so overall, I’m happy with my purchase. My only complain in the amount of maintenance the smaller IZ-270 will require.
