I guess I should have expected that for around $25 this would not be a serious air cleaner. Especially since all the highly rated ones cost at least a few hundred dollars.
First of all, this is really just a very simple ionizer with simple “filters.” I really don’t consider the filters to be filters at all, and I will tell you why. They are very thin, almost like paper. I bet a piece of tissue stuck to the front of a house fan would have the same effect, and for a lot less money.
The Ionic Zone is VERY tiny, and I honestly don’t think it really covers much space at all. Probably only a small part of a room. Basically in the area it is supposed to cover it causes the dust and stuff to fall out of the air. Now, it is supposed to go back to the air cleaner and stick on these metal plates. However, only some of it does from what I noticed. The rest ends up on the carpet or furniture. Luckily, I have clear vinyl covers over the chairs and sofa so I can wipe it up. If you have cloth furniture you may just be grinding that dirt into the fabric whenever you sit down. Frankly though, I would rather have an air cleaner that actually collected all the dust, and that is what I’m looking to replace this one with next.
The unit is relatively quiet, or as quiet as one can be and have a fan blowing. It is simple to operate but then again there is not much to how it works anyway. It does seem to collect some of the nearby dust, so you will have to clean it, which after awhile gets to be a nuisance. This involves opening it up and wiping these little metal strips inside (which is tedious). I would not put something that nasty in my dishwater even if I had a dishwasher, which I don’t. Most people will probably have to do what I do, which is take it outside and wash it in a bucket with soap and water. Speaking of the metal strips/plate inside, I really don’t see how it could collect much dust anyway, since it is so small.
I have never seen the paper filters anywhere else, so if the company ever goes out of business, you would be stuck. That’s another thing to worry about.
One last thing that I am undecided about is the whole idea of using an ionizer in the first place. Recently, Consumer Reports did a VERY negative study about ionizers, and it really makes you wonder if you should even have one in your house in the first place. The other thing is that this does make some ozone, which the health groups all say to avoid at all costs. The ozone is what makes some of these air cleaners give off that slightly odd odor. You either like that or you hate it. My sense of smell isn’t so good so I don’t notice it much, although a couple of friends tell me they think it is unpleasant and would rather be in another room when it is running.
So if a decent air cleaner is out of your price range, you might be better off just waiting until you have the money. If you do what I did, which is buy several cheap ones, you could just take that same money added together and buy a nice one.
