Our pursuit for an effective, quiet air purifier started out as a lesson in frustration. Because I love gadgets and technology, the first units I looked at were the “Ionic” purifiers that use ozone to clean the air. Those units have no filters to replace and they are totally silent which appealed to me as well. While the science behind these devices intrigued me, I’ve since read several disturbing reports on having too much ozone in the air you breath. See article: http://www.epa.gov/iaq/pubs/ozonegen.html

After a bunch of research, I decided we would be getting standard HEPA air purifiers for our bedrooms. These units use a fan to draw the air through a HEPA filter, and then exhaust the clean air back into the room. There are SEVERAL choices of this type on the market. I was hoping to be able to meet our needs with an inexpensive model (especially since the replacement HEPA filters average between $18 - $30 each depending on the model).

The first unit we bought was a Holmes HEPA Air purifier Model # HAP240 which we purchased from Wal-Mart for only $29.84. We took it home, put it in our son’s room and turned it on. BINGO! It was supper quiet, and dirt-cheap. Obviously, we thought we’d found the model we’d be getting for our room. A few days later, we bought another Holmes model# HAP240 and put it in our room. As soon as we turned it on, I knew it was going back to the store. There was an obvious grinding sound that could be heard coming from the fan motor. It sounded like a bad bearing or something. Anyhow, we returned it to Wal-Mart and brought home another one just like it. DANG! Same stupid sound. I guess with an inexpensive unit like that, you may get lucky and get a good one (like in our son’s room) or you get a bad one. It’s a gamble.

After reading reviews on Epinions and a few other articles, we decided to try the HepaTech line of air purifiers. is well known for exceptional ceiling fans, so I figured they knew how to make a quiet fan motor for an air purifier. Of the models available, we decided on the HepaTech #30065.

SIZE:

The unit is about 15” wide X 5” deep X 13.5” tall. It is not too big, and it doesn’t seem to get in the way at all. It sits snug up against the wall of our room on the floor. The unit is actually wall-mountable and comes with a mounting bracket if you would choose to do that.

Color:

I wasn’t sure what we’d be getting here. On some web sites, I’ve seen the HepaTech 65 pictured as white, yet many other sites show it as an off-white or beige color. The one that we got from the Wal-Mart web site is the beige. I actually like this color better, because it blends in against our wall very nicely. Almost like camouflage!

Room size:

The Hepatech 65 is rated for a room size of 14’ X 16’. Our room is actually a little bit smaller than this, but we figured it would just work even better.

Filter:

This unit uses a replaceable HEPA filter, which also has an activated charcoal layer to eliminate odors. It filters out dust, pollen, pet dander and other pollutants as small as .1 micron. The average cost for this filter is around $27.00 and it is supposed to last 4-6 months. Replacing the filter is very easy as it just drops right in after the front grill is pulled forward.

Fan and noise level:

Okay, here is where things get weird. The fan it’s self seems to run VERY smooth. There is no grinding noise (like we noticed with the other units) at all. The only thing you hear is the air moving. BUT, it moves a LOT of air! It is, by no means, a quiet unit. Even on the lowest setting, it’s kind of loud. The thing is, it’s such a clean, even sound that we don’t mind it at all. It’s a pure “white” noise. You can tell it’s a quality unit by the even sound. But honestly, with our door shut and this unit running on low, I think someone could break in and we’d never hear it. Hopefully our useless dog would bark.

Other features:

The HepaTech 65 also features an “ionizer” that can be switch on and off independently of the fan motor. This works by releasing negatively charged ions (ozone) into the air. It supposedly makes the particles cling to the filter even better. Because of the articles I’ve read about ozone, we only use the ionizer feature for a few hours a day when we are not in the room.

Performance:

Honestly, I wouldn’t know how to accurately gauge the effectiveness of an air purifier. I can tell you that my wife and I both seem to sleep much better since we’ve started using this one, and the room does seem “fresher”.

Warranty:

5-year warranty on motor. 1 year warranty on other parts and labor.

Over all, we really like the Hepatech 65 Air Purifier. It’s a little loud, but it’s a very clean, even sound so we don’t mind it at all.

Update: 4-21-05 We’ve had our original Hepatech 65 for almost a year now with no problems at all. The inexpensive $29 Holmes model (mentioned above) which we had in our son’s room started to sound really bad. The fan bearing must be going out. So we ordered another 65 just like ours from the Wal-Mart web site for him. It arrived the very next day. In my opinion, they are the best deal out there for Hepa air cleaners.
