As a moderate allergy sufferer, I used to dread the arrival of spring when everything would be covered with a chartreuse layer of pollen. Autumn would inevitably provide additional misery. The left-over mold of summer and airborne ragweed checking in made me want to check out any method of relief available.

There is a dizzying array of air purifiers on the market; some with permanent filters, and others with replaceable ones. Back before GTE became Verizon, I purchased a SounDesign brand air purifier at their employee store for around seventy dollars. Its excellent quality and silent operation have served me well for a dozen years. Unfortunately, the demise of SounDesign as a company, and the subsequent problem of replacement filter availability, have rendered this unit useless.

One air purifier that I considered buying was the model, made famous in an endless loop of late-night infomercials. Their very impressive display of the product’s features helped it become a top-seller, but issues surrounding the poor durability of these units convinced me to pass-up the ; its $350.00 price-tag helping to make that decision even easier.

As a regular Amazon.com shopper, I decided to search their inventory for a lower-priced alternative to the more expensive models with their equally expensive replacement filters. The two models under consideration were the Hepatech 25, and its almost identical cousin, the Hepatech 27. Both of these are table models which use HEPA filter technology via a replaceable filter. The model I ultimately chose to purchase was the model 25.

What’s in the box?

The unit measures approximately 12 inches deep by 12 inches wide, and stands 5 in tall. A slide switch on the top of the air cleaner offers three fan speeds, and an off position. A small red light is adjacent to the power switch, and glows when the unit is in operation. Also fitted is a sliding on-off switch which activates the ionizer, with its green indicator light. The power cord measures 7 feet in length. An 18-page owner’s manual has comprehensive text and illustration regarding all aspects of operation, as well as an explanation of the 5 year limited warranty. A replaceable HEPA filter, and a washable foam grille filter are also provided. The unit is built in China for distribution by the Fan Company.

How does it work?

The Hepatech 25 operates quietly at lower speeds, and moves a large volume of air when the highest speed is selected. The manual provides no (cubic ft. per minute) statistics, but claims a 99.97 percent efficiency rating when used in a 110 square ft. room. The enclosed documentation lays claim to the effective removal of cooking odors, musty smells, tobacco smoke and pet odors. The HEPA filter technology has carbon components that assist with the odor elimination process, and “sub-micron filter material”, which claims to be capable of removing particles as small as 0.1 microns. When the ionizer is engaged, it provides airborne particulates with a negative static charge, allowing the filter material to trap them more efficiently.

The good . . .

The Hepatech 25 air purifier is a viable, low-cost alternative for improving the environment in a small room, such as a bedroom or office. It is simple to operate, and does an effective job of removing pollen and other irritants from the air, which was my most important consideration when choosing the product. Buttons on either side of the front grille allow for easy access to the replacement filter component. The small footprint, front air intake design, and extra-long power cord give it exceptional location versatility in the average room.

I purchased this air purifier through Amazon.com several months ago, when the sale price was just shy of $40.00. An Internet search at the time of this writing shows the lowest available price to be $61.01 (www.absolutehome.com). The power behind the brand should assure access to replacement filters for years to come. Both models 25 and 27 are widely available.

The Bad . . .

My old air purifier had an ionizer whose operation was tied in to the main power switch - when the fan was off, so was the ionizer. This unit has a separate ionizer switch that is independent, and therefore can still be operational when it is essentially not needed, should you forget to flip the power switch to the off position when stopping the fan. However, this is a minor fault, since all air purifiers are designed for constant use.

The highest speed fan setting may be annoying to light-sleepers if this unit is located in a bedroom, though your average air conditioner is much more intrusive in this regard.

If you are an AM radio listener, be aware that when the ionizer is activated, interference in the form of a measured tick, resembling that of a clock, can occur if your radio is nearby.

The HEPA replacement filters can be rather expensive. recommends replacing the filter every six months under average conditions. An Internet search conducted at the time of this writing found that the least expensive genuine replacement filter will set you back $11.00 (www.inlandescape.com). With the occasional sales and promotions in play, chances are you may do better.

I recommend the Hepatech 25 air purifier. With its simple and nearly silent operation, it provides genuine HEPA technology at an affordable price, making your escape from the misery of allergy season a reality.
