Reviews on Honeywell QuietCare 17000 Air Purifier Packaged well! The Honeywell 17000 claims it is 30% more quiet than ever before. If that's the case, their previous models must have sounded like a jet en...

We recently moved to a new house located just off a dusty dirt road. Add two dogs to the mix, and you can just imagine the dirty air I must contend with.

I’ve never used an air cleaner before, but decided I just HAD to do something. In addition it seemed I had developed an allergy to the dog dander and dust, because ever since we’ve moved here I’ve been sneezing.

Although we didn’t look at many different air cleaners, the 17000 seemed like the most heavy-duty, serious air cleaner readily available locally - and one of the most expensive. It seemed like the best choice for us.

~ The 17000 QuietCare Air Cleaner

This model is a semi-rounded shape, with a molded handle built-in to the design. It’s easy to pick up and move. It stands about 15″ high and is about 12″ deep.

It has an Off button, and three air cleaning settings; High, Medium, and Low.

This unit offers 99.97% HEPA filtration. And in fact it actually has two filters - the HEPA and a pre-filter. This was one thing that attracted us to this product. The HEPA filter should last about 6 months before it needs to be replaced. And there is a button which indicates when the filters need to be replaced, which is very handy.

The specifications say that this model air cleaner is recommended for a 12′ by 14′ room.

~ Our Experience with the Air Cleaner

Is it quiet? The is touted as “quiet”, complete with “QuietCare” in the title. Their definition of “quiet” is obviously different than mine, however. The low setting is not too bad, but at the medium or high setting you almost have to raise your voice to be heard. The noise is distracting and hard to ignore. However, the “white noise” aspect at the low setting can be good for promoting sleep, similar to having a fan going in the background.

Does it clean the air? Well, unfortunately, even with the full HEPA filtration this unit offers, and set on high (for as long as I could stand the noise), I didn’t notice any difference in the air quality in the room. In fact it has a blower, much like a fan, that seemed to blow the dust around. Upon checking the filter I could see that it was dirty, so it was definitely catching dust, but not to any practical, noticeable extent. I’ve tried it at various settings and in different rooms - even in the bedroom all night with the door closed - with no noticeable difference in the air quality.

Is it reliable? After using it for about a month I discovered that it would no longer turn off. The only way to stop it was to unplug the unit. The “off” button was now useless.

The good things: One good thing about the 17000 is the exterior design makes it easy to clean. You can simply wipe it with a damp cloth.

Another good feature is the soft touch control buttons that do not make a clicking sound when pressed. This would be great for a child’s room, for instance if you want to go in and change the setting and not wake the child.

Final Thoughts

Maybe I’m just expecting too much from an air cleaner, because this is the only one I’ve ever used. But I can honestly say that I didn’t notice much difference in the quality of the air in the rooms while using the Air Cleaner. For the price we paid, about $150, I was certainly expecting more. And to top it off, it became inoperable when the Off button stopped working. Therefore I cannot recommend this air cleaner.
