Recently we have added a Honeywell F300 Electronic Air Cleaner to our furnace (a Rheem Criterion II gas furnace). Due to seasonal allergies and dust, my family and I decided that we needed a much better air filtration system than the standard 1″ pleated filters that we had used before (2 Filtreat 1250 14×20 filters every couple of months).
Since installing this whole house air cleaner (performed by Glendale Heating), we have all been able to breathe much easier. It’s amazing how well it has filtered the air. Since we had our furnace cleaned as well, it’s easy to see if the filter is keeping up performance by looking for dust in the fan compartment, so far so good. Honeywell stands by their equipment and offers a “10 year clean coil guarantee” for those that have an HVAC.
Maintenance has been fairly easy. Every month, I turn off the fan system, remove the pre-filters and cells. The pre-filters I vacuum and replace and the Cells go into a dishwasher. If you use the dishwasher technique, it’s important to stop it before the drying cycle so that any remaining dirt if present isn’t baked onto the cells. You’ll want to have it air dry before turning it back on so you don’t short out the system.
There is an optional post filter that you can purchase at any time. But since these are disposable, and I’m trying to reduce my addition to land fills, we haven’t been using the post filter. We’ve still had fantastic results, and those that need even higher cleaning efficiency can go for the post filters.
