I purchased this air purifier from Wal-Mart for about $60 after putting a smaller Holmes unit in my daughters bedroom. My daughter and I have typical allergies, but who doesn’t. Nothing severe, we live in Central Texas which is notorious for cedar, pollen, airborne mold, and it probably doesn’t help that we have 3 cats and a dog!
I have had an air purifier in my bedroom for almost the last 10 years. The first was a Trion (one of the first ionic cleaners with a fan however) and the latest a Duracraft Hepa. I work nights and am a day sleeper. I’ve been using the Duracraft for way too long with the same filter. I use it primarily for the “white noise” so I can sleep during the day. I considered buying a new filter, but found they were very expensive so I considered purchasing a new unit.
The Holmes unit is reasonably priced which was my biggest deciding factor. The unit is also stylish and well packaged. It’s silver plastic in color and the tower design allows it to fit in a corner or up against a wall. It also pivots on it’s base.
The unit comes with (and requires) 2 Holmes Hepa filters. These filters are much better than what I’ve been used to as they are a combo hepa/charcoal filter. They are about 12”x4”. It is very easy to install the filters with the included brackets. The unit has 3 speeds controlled by one switch, the ionization can be switched on/off by another. There is also a filter change indicator light which is reset by a pinhole switch.
Performance:
I was never worried about noise because I used my previous filter for that purpose! I was very happy with the Holmes though b/c the highest setting provides enough white noise for me, while the lowest setting is almost inaudible, and the middle setting somewhere in between.
The filtration is excellent. My previous Duracraft had a cylinder filter which seemed much larger than these. It seems as if the fan/filter design on the Holmes: 1. creates a better air current in the room and 2. sends all the air it moves through the filters. The ionization works very well. I was surprised to find that this unit (along with the smaller one I bought for my daughters room) has 4 ion producing needles as opposed to the one on my previous units. I was also happy that with ionization on in this unit I did not hear the pops and crackling I had gotten used to. The only down side I’ve noticed is that (and this is petty) the cylinder fan design of the tower blows the air out toward the same side as the cord. If you’ve got it up against a wall, as I do, and want to hide as much wire as you can it blows on the wall.
Breathing:
My personal opinion is this unit is better than all previous one’s I’ve had. My daughter and I usually cough while we sleep, but since we’ve put these in our bedrooms we don’t. Well, if we do it’s not enough to wake us, and I don’t while I’m awake! That’s all I wanted the filter to do, and it does.
Replacement filters were available at Wal Mart for around $16 (this unit requires 2). Holmes also seems to use the same filters for many different units. This strikes me as good since it should be easier to get replacements.
