Once upon a time…

After a long and hard day at work, there is nothing more that I want than to be home with my three warm cats and my dear husband. After climbing three flights of stairs to my apartment, I wearily open my door and I am lovingly greeted by three little furry bodies, pulsating uncontrollably with purrs. Aaahh… BAM! What is that smell? Is that the litter box? I just changed all of them yesterday with that brand new expensive cat litter and I can smell it already??? Why didn’t my husband notice? Suddenly, my affections for my cats and my husband turns into annoyance as I storm into the enclosed room to scoop the cat litter and spray it with orange, lemon or whatever popular scent of the week I have.

This sad story, unfortunately was the story of my life before my shining knight TrueAir came along with his bright and gleaming air filter.

My smelly family…

We have three lovely, well-behaved cats that we must keep inside since we live in an apartment on the third floor. We have three litter boxes set up for them in a our spare utility room (not just any litter box, but specially shaped litter boxes that cost a fortune). The size of the room is equivalent to a small bathroom and the only other item in there is our hot water heater.

What the heck is the problem???

Even though we have tried every kind of cat litter despite the costs, nothing seems to work long-term. After trying some very expensive and well-reviewed cat litters, I began to wonder if maybe the problem is ventilation. There is absolutely no fan or ventilation in the utility room. In a desperate attempt, I set out to look for an air filter and was willing to spend several hundred dollars if I had to just to get the smell OUT.

Love at first sight…

When registering for our wedding at Bed, Bath %26 Beyond, I was looking through their air filters. I couldn’t help but notice that this one came with the option of buying a special filter specifically for pet odors (you can also get one for tobacco %26 diaper odors). I figured I would try it and if needed, I could always take it back. It was only $24.99 and I had a coupon for 20% off. Even though it came with an air filter, I bought the one specifically for pet odors.

TruAir is a loyal friend through and true…

We put it directly in the room where the cat litter is placed. All you have to do is plug into any outlet and turn it on. I put it on “quick clean” for the first day, but after that, I switched it to “quiet clean.” Quick clean is for very strong odors, whereas quiet clean is to prevent odors.

What my smelly family thinks…

They don’t even notice it. It is so quiet, that you forget it is even on. Three days after plugging it in, I was looking for one of our cats and I found him nestled on top of the water heater, sleeping! In the past, they seemed to be plugging their nose before diving into that room. This shows that the smell was improved even for them and the fan on the filter does not scare them.

I have been using this air filter since June of 2005 and I am so happy with it. I used to come home from work and the first thing I would smell is dirty cat litter. Happily ever after…

Just yesterday when I came home, I greeted my cats with prolonged affections, loved on my husband and was in the middle of making dinner when I realized that over a week had passed since I had checked on the cat litter. I went into the utility room (which is right next to the kitchen) and noticed that the two litter boxes (I have been able to get rid of one!) were full, but you couldn’t smell them until you removed the lids. Ahhh… this is the life and I love living it.

UPDATE….

As of January 2006, we are STILL using TrueAir in our utility room. We have since moved in a washer/dryer set and TrueAir keeps the room from becoming dusty from the cat litter and the dryer lint.
