Our family of five moved into a 2 flat last winter that has a wonderful, roomy eat-in kitchen where we spend many hours cooking and eating together. I toyed with an assortment of odor eliminators for that area of the house, including candles, oils, sprays, plug-ins and tubs of weird gel. I finally found the Air Air Purifier at Home Depot during one of the many shopping sprees I went on while pregnant and nesting. I was reluctant to buy too many replacement filters because I wasn’t yet convinced it could do the job, but it’s now three months later and I’m still happy with the performance of the Air system.

The purifier uses a carbon filter and small fan to eliminate odors rather than mask them, but unlike sprays that also promise to eliminate odors there is no chemical smell and it works all of the time. The downside is that you need to have a strategically placed outlet with lots of space to hold the purifier. There are no cords - you have to plug it directly into an outlet and it’s at least full six inches long and four inches wide.

I suppose it isn’t the most attractive odor eliminating device on the market, but I’ve had it in full view plugged into an outlet that sits in the middle of a wall with no furniture or decorations to distract the eye and it doesn’t bug me at all. The outlet also sits at nearly eye level about four feet off the floor, so that’s saying something. As shown in the picture here, the unit is comprised of a cream colored plastic with dark, vertical vents through which the fan sucks in and emits air. The unit has rounded edges, resembling a mask you might see in the Star Wars movies. The construction is more durable than what I found with even the more expensive plug-in fragrance systems.

If your only available outlet is behind some major appliance close to the ground, I wouldn’t bother with this system. If you’ve been blessed with a centrally located outlet that’s at least six inches off the ground though, this is a fantastic buy. Mine is equidistant from a diaper pail, the family garbage, the stove and the area where my baby slept as a newborn. Sure, I would have preferred to buy a more expensive system that purifies the entire house (especially with the arrival of my daughter), but it was either that or an air conditioner and the air conditioner won out. Even if I had been able to purchase a big ticket air purifier though, the unit would still serve as an effective odor for problem areas like this.

I also love the fact that the Air system is completely noiseless and that a small red indicator near the top of the unit tells you when it’s time to replace the filter. After three months, I’m getting close to needing to replace the filter but I’ve got at least another week or two to go. I paid about $20 for the unit at Home Depot and purchased one replacement filter for something like $6. I don’t mind paying $6 every three months if it means I don’t need to continually spray, light candles and burn expensive oils in my kitchen. I still use those products, but now I use them for pleasure, ambiance or disinfection - not for masking or eliminating odors.

Filter life may vary, depending on usage and household conditions but I have to think that we would be categorized as a heavy usage family. We aren’t smoking or keeping rotting food out on the counter tops, but we produce a significant amount of meals and waste in this room. The maximum amount of time the filter is supposed to be used is four months, and we’ll be just a few weeks ahead of the four month mark by the time I finally change it.

Overall, I would enthusiastically recommend the Air Air Purification System to friends and family that have the prime outlet with which to operate it effectively. The carbon filter and noiseless fan do the job better than any other odor elimination method I’ve tried.

Five out of five stars.
