I purchased two of these units a year ago - an investment of $1,000. I used them over the last winter, and was very happy with them. Of the four people in the house, nobody noticed an ozone problem.

I did not use them over the summer, but did clean the electrostatic cells in the dishwasher as was recommended in the user manual. When fall came around and the windows were mostly closed I fired them up again and was upset to discover that after 15 minutes all four of the people in my house were experiencing sore throats, chest pains, burning eyes, and one had a headache. The ozone odor was very strong. We turned them off and the odor and symptoms went away almost immediately.

I tried cleaning the cells again, both in the dishwasher, then by hand, but this did not help. I also replaced the pre-filter and the charcoal filter, again the results were unchanged.

I contacted and spoke to a tech support person, who told me that the ozone levels emitted by the unit do not change from year to year, and the best advice they could offer was to point the unit at a wall or chair. I tried this and it was not helpful.

I then spoke with the service manager, who again told me that the ozone levels do not change on a unit. I told him obviously it can happen - it happened to me - he replied that he had no data to support my claim.

I asked him how to fix the problem - he said there was nothing to fix.

I asked him what could cause this problem - he said nothing causes this. He told me I am the only person who has ever indicated such a problem. His best suggestion, other than pointing it at a wall, would be to bring it to a local appliance repair shop to have them look it over.

I asked him if I could get a replacement cell (over $100 to purchase), on trial, to see if that fixed the problem, and he said no.

His last suggestion was that I try to recover some of my money by selling them on eBay.

I have trouble believing the company that manufactures these things has absolutely no idea what could increase or decrease ozone emissions.

So, I guess my best bet might be to put cushions on them and use them as very expensive foot rests.
