I have had a Friedrich air cleaner for years. Here are some tips. Electrostatic precipitators (EP) produce ozone. Fresh carbon filter material catches it before it leaves the air cleaner. Consumer Reports reported no ozone from a Friedrich air cleaner with the carbon filter installed. Some people, myself included, are bothered by ozone. The smaller and tighter the room, the bigger the problem. So replace the carbon filter every 3 months maximum. The cheapest way to do so is to buy carbon filter material in bulk and cut it down to size. In my old Friedrich there is an on-off switch where the frame for the carbon filter fits. So one can cut out the old carbon and leave the frame in place. There is room to fit in some carbon filter material. Go to Filters-now.com to buy their bulk carbon in 4-foot-wide rolls 6 feet long for $30 in their specialty filters section. That should easily last a couple years or more. Bonus is that carbon filters remove volatile pollutants. http://www.filters-now.com/fxobspec.php#FFMBulkMedia . There are cheaper EP air cleaners. Just make sure to put carbon in those other EP air cleaners AFTER the air leaves the collection plates. There is usually a way to do so some how. Tape or rubber band it on, or fold up some carbon filter material and place it against the exit point from the plates if there is any space at all. I learned from Friedrich people how to clean the collection plates if one does not have a dishwasher. Just soak the plate assembly in hot water with dishwasher soap for half an hour at least. In a bathtub or laundry tub. Turn the plate assembly now and then. Rinse. Repeat if necessary. To stop noises and rattles you can pad here and there with cotton balls, toilet paper, paper towels, etc.. Sounds like the problem with TV interference that some people are having is from not having properly grounded 3-prong outlets to plug the Friedrich and/or the television into. Also, there are cheap surge protector power strips that have an EMI/RFI noise filter in them. Try plugging the TV and/or the air cleaner into it. This may also help with noise created by the TV that is picked up by some AM radios. If you get cable TV use a surge protector that also has in and out ports for coax/cable.
