My wife’s brother had an Ecoquest Breeze that he let us borrow. He swore by it and said that it took away his coughs and he was never sick when he had it around. My wife often wakes in the middle of the night coughing and sneezing due to allergies. We used it and it seemed to take that away, but the smell of the purifier was so strong and horrible that it made me nauseous and sick to my stomach. It also began to give me headaches. That was after one day of use.

My wife did not wake up in the middle of the night that night, but it also rained that night, so I don’t know if the rain had something to do with that or if it was the unit itself. We had to turn it off because of the smell. My wife called her brother and asked him about it and I started doing some research because I thought it would probably be good to get an air purifier of some sort- just didnt know which one to get. Anyway, he explained to her that she could turn off the “purifier” and the smell would go away. It did. Now, it’s on without the purifier and we are not if it is cleaning the air or not because we don’t feel any different. My wife says that she notices a difference however.

I am not sure if any of you read the very first entry about air purifiers being frauds or not, but I read through it a bit for kicks. Of course, it was very negative towards air purifiers in general. My brother-in-law, to the contrary, said that there have been a whole bunch of independent studies on the Breeze and how good it is etc etc and that there is indeed a “bad ozone” and a “good ozone.” That’s when I started doing some research of my own to see for myself what the truth was. I looked all over the net and could not find any independent studies. I did get onto Consumer Guide’s website, but you have to pay to get anything from them, so did not see what they had to say. Finally, came upon the following website, which happens to be the EPA: (http://www.epa.gov/iaq/pubs/ozonegen.html).

Now, I don’t know how much you can trust the government at times. I am just as skeptical of people and things as you are, but I don’t really see any benefit of the EPA making any false statements agains air purifiers…. so I read what they had to say, thinking they are probably about as independent as you can get since they have nothing to gain or lose from their stance on air purifiers and dangers of Ozone.

In a nutshell, their website says that all air purifiers are pretty much worthless. They say that all Ozone is harmful… well, let me restate that. They say that it “may” or “can” be harmful. They say that there is no such thing as “bad” or “good” Ozone. They go through a laundry list of things it can do to you and the dangers (which are ironic, because it causes things like coughing, shortness of breath, all the things you buy an air purifier for). They go on to say that beyond the potentially harmful Ozone that is produced by air purifiers, air cleaners don’t effectively remove odors, dust, viruses, bacteria, mold or pretty much anything else you bought it for. At any rate, I’m not here to bash air purifiers or promote them. I just don’t know what to think really.

My brother-in-law swears by his Ecoquest Breeze, my wife thinks it is great, it made me feel sick, my kids seemed to be alright with it on, the wacko who submitted the first review in this section says it’s going to kill you, and the EPA says it’s all a bunch poppycock and is potentially harmful (http://www.epa.gov/iaq/pubs/ozonegen.html). I guess you just have figure out for yourself if it works for you. If so, great. If not, oh well.
