An excellent air filtration unit for a room 10 feet by 10 feet or smaller, the DeLonghi DAP70 provides both air filtration and ionization to remove as many particles as possible from your indoor air.
The apartment that my partner and I share is near a busy road and the dust that builds up throughout the place is amazing. I’ve often wondered if that much dust can appear on the windowsills overnight, then what was I breathing in and out while I’m there. Not wanting to have to contemplate that idea any longer, I asked for an air purifier/filter for Christmas. My Mom came through and I got the DAP70, along with a replacement cartridge under the tree.
The Details
Coming in at about a foot and a half square and eight inches or so high, the DAP70 is small enough to place on top of a dresser or in the corner of a room. It is designed such that it can placed in three different positions, lying flat, lying on its side, or mounted to a wall. The wall mounting materials are included with the DAP70 should you wish to do this.
The DAP70 offers two different types of air purification. The standard air filter offers a pre-filter, a HEPA filter and a carbon filter for the air. All three are removable and last varying amounts of time, depending on the amount of material in the air. The pre-filter can be washed and wiped down when significant amounts of dust build up on it. For the HEPA and carbon filters, they will have to be replaced when they are no longer working. In addition to the standard filtering, the DAP70 also offers an ionization feature that helps remove odors from the air by electrostaticly charging the air as it passes through the filter to remove even more particles, especially the smaller ones that can carry odor.
For the standard filtration, the DAP70 offers three different modes, “hi,” “medium,” and “quiet.” In actuality these are just various speeds that the DAP70 can be operated at. The speed on the unit will determine how long it takes to totally recirculate the air in the room. The higher the speed of the DAP70, the faster the recirculation is in the room. The owner’s manual suggests running the unit at high speeds for only shorter lengths of time and using either the medium or quiet setting otherwise. They state that the unit works best when left on constantly and state that the motor is designed for this type of constant use. If the ionization feature is used, there are merely two settings, “on,” and “off.” It can only be used while the main filtration system is being used.
The DAP70 is designed for smaller rooms and the maximum size suggested in the owner’s manual is for a 10-foot by 10-foot room, however the square footage covered is up to 400 square feet, which is a bit larger than the 10×10 room. Either way, this unit is not designed to clean the air in an entire house, it is clearly just for a single room, such as a bedroom or the like.
How does it work?
In the three nights that I’ve had it going in my bedroom, I can already notice a difference in the air quality with the DAP70, or at least my nose can. For weeks now I’ve been suffering from sinus congestion and while I’m not completely cleared up, sleeping was always the worst for me, congestion wise. Nowadays with the filter running, I wake up relatively clear headed and I can sleep through the night.
An added benefit for me is that my partner likes to sleep with a fan on – which he used to run every night. However, all that does is kick up dust in the room and blow it around. The DAP70 provides sounds enough like a small fan, that it keeps him happy falling asleep and it keeps me from sneezing, coughing and blowing my nose all night.
I’ve been running the DAP70 on medium at night and on “quiet” during the day when no one is home and the bedroom is empty. So far I haven’t noticed any problems with the unit, though I have noticed that dust collects quite quickly on the pre-filter. I’ll probably have to wash it down in a few weeks.
