My wife and I purchased a Bionaire BAP825-U Tower Air Purifier as our first look into air purifiers. Since I already had a Bionaire Tower Fan (that works great, and has worked great for over a year and a half), I figured that this would probably be a good buy. We were already looking into other units, and had decided that this unit would be moved from room to room to clean different rooms while the more expensive unit stayed in one place.
The unit comes with a remote control, which is cool. I kinda expected that because my Bionaire fan has a remote control, too. Unfortunately, that turned out to be the high point.
The way the filters are attached seems to be somewhat funny. There doesn’t appear to be a good seal between the filters (it needs two) and the unit itself. Specifically, the filters ‘hang’ rather than sit on a seal, and the way they hang is somewhat questionable. When I was putting them on the first time I was unsure whether or not the filters were on properly I almost wanted to get some duct tape to hold them down, but I didn’t.
We ran the unit sporadically for 3 days, on all of the different fan speed settings. It was doing a good job cleaning the air. However, on the 4th day, both of us happened to notice the unit spontaneously turn off. I got up to see what was going on, and while I was walking towards the unit, there was a sizeable electic spark inside the unit that both of us saw. I unplugged the unit to let it sit for a while.
The unit never worked again. I did plug it back in (carefully) and try to turn it on, but it would not turn on using either the power button on the top or the remote. So, we packed it back in the box and took it back.
It would seem that this unit has two issues: First, the way the HEPA filters fit against the unit is simply a poor design, and Second, some Quality Control issues. We ran the unit on it’s highest setting only briefly (less than one minute), the rest of the time it was running at the lowest setting. The total run time we got out of this particular unit was maybe 40 hours or so.
