So, let me tell you the story that led me to purchasing the Peaceful Breeze Air Purifier, Model #388. Let me state here that I bought it through Amazon.com, for $43 something. I myself have the purple/silver colored one, but there is a black/silver and a champagne/silver also available.
My 5 year old has been diagnosed with seasonal allergies- so bad that she was put on a chewable prescription for them. She had horrible coughing at night when the drainage from her nose would seep back to her throat. She starting taking the pills, which she was some better, but still had a cough now and then. I had suggested to my husband that maybe an air purifier in her room may help her.
Since we have a cotton gin located just a few blocks away from us, along with the citys incinerator, plus there are plenty of trees/flowers/and other stuff, Im sure some of those allergens make their way into our house. My husband said maybe an air purifier would help at night.
So, I got on epinions, and milled around for several days, trying to figure out what I wanted. I had never bought one of these before, so I was rather novice in the situation. I did know that I wanted one that did not take up a lot of space. So much to choose from, I just got tired of searching and just bought one. I figured good or bad I could tell what happened with it here on epinions. So, what drove me to buy this? Its cute- it kind of reminds me of R2-D2 from Star Wars for some reason. Plus, its purple, so it would match the bedroom. It is small also, so it would not take up a whole lot of space. This thing is suggested for rooms 12 X 15 or smaller.
Here is a little info from the Peaceful Breeze website:
Peaceful Breeze Model 388 small room air purifier uses a combination of filtration processes to provide you with a HEPA filter air purifier, an activated carbon filter air purifier and/or an ionic air purifier all in one unit. The negative-ion generator, ozone, HEPA filter and activated carbon filter combine to eliminate and absorb household odors, smoke, germs and harmful gases.
The HEPA air filter also purifies 99.97% of the dust, allergens, bacteria and viruses in the air.
Optional fragrance cartridge function lets you choose the scent of the room.
Minimal filter changes with normal use. On average, the filters will need to be changed every six months, if the unit is run 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Ok then, let me mention here that we got a fragrance cartridge that was lemon scented, so this thing doubles as an aromatherapy type deal too. I threw it out- thats not what I bought this thing for. This purifier plugs in the wall, but it does have a lengthy cord, and is 120V.
The filter goes in the top, just unscrew the silver lid and drop it in. I think filters are listed for about $12 on Peaceful Breezes website.
Heres a summary of what it does (taken from instruction manual):
On the front of the machine, you will see 2 buttons. One is an on/off button, which is silver. The other is an Ozone/negative ion cleaning button. The ozone button oxidizes the pollutants it finds, rendering them harmless while it removes the odors. It can enable the production of hydroxyl radicals and eliminate odors, bacteria, chemicals, mold, and other pollutants. This function is used to kill germs and dispel formaldehyde. This cycle should not be used for more than 60 minutes at a time. I dont use this function at all. The thought of formaldehyde floating around in my kids room is not a peaceful thought. Of course germs arent either.
Ok, the other cycle available is negative ion cleaning function, which you push the button down, and a light will turn green, where as the light will be red when you use the formaldehyde producing one (how appropriate). This function is used to purify the air and eliminate smog. Here, negative ions are electrically charged particles that remove airborne contaminates such as smog, pollen, and dust from the air we breathe. When interacting with the bodys physiological systems, negative ions have a rejuvenating effect, improving cardiac and pulmonary functions.
So, the manual states- there is no limit to how long the negative ion function can be operated. Keep this fact in mind for later here.
Experience
So, it sounds all good, doesnt it? Sounds like it would help you out with you allergies and such. Well, I thought so too. I bought this just to use during the seasonal allergy seasons- which around here is October-November and then again in March-April. I did not intend to use this everyday, but I did plan to use it day and night during the allergy season.
We had had the unit about a week and a half, and I think it had been on for about that long. I could really tell that the air in the room was much cleaner than the air in the rest of the house. I had been keeping the door closed at night, and in the morning I could really tell a difference.
Then, I noticed something- it seemed like after about a week and a half of being on- the output of fresh air in the side vents where the air comes out seemed to have diminished some. I thought, oh gosh, I bet I fried this thing- let me check the directions to make sure I dont need to cut it off for a while. But note what I said earlier, there is no limit to how long the negative ion function can be operated. I had it on the negative ion setting, so what is the deal? I cut if off for the afternoon and cut it back on that night, and the problem was solved. I thought, well hmmm. Four days later, same situation.
Thats when I decided to go to the manufacturers website www.peacefulbreeze.com and contact them. Matter of fact, I had to email them five times to get a response. The response was asking me a few questions about details about what was going on, so I immediately responded- thinking, gosh Ive got a live one here, dont let him get away. So, here we are 5 days and uuuhhhh several emails (I forgot how many) later, and I have never gotten anybody to respond again.
Well, I am glad I did not buy this to use 365/24/7. Id be in a creek without a paddle on that deal. Sure, if I turn the unit off for a few hours and then turn it back on it will work fine, but it is supposed to work continuously. It works well when it does work, but it diminishes performance wise if you leave it on for several days at a time.
Forget this thing- not worth it at all. Sure it works for us, but since we are stuck with it, Ill just have to do the best we can. Customer service, what customer service? Ugh. This irritates the heck out of me.
