We have two in our home and will buy a third for our garage office. Have an in-law who is very allergic - including pet dander. He has been able to visit us and remain symptom free since we got our first units. Additionally, my kitchen vent fan does not vent externally so cooking odors were a problem before buying my first Friedrich electronic air cleaner. These units are keeping our home odor and allergen free. –Cleaning– is very easy and not expensive. I vacuum the filter and wash the removable inner ionizing section/collector plates in the dishwasher. Periodically, it is necessary to replace the carbon filter.
Friedrich Air Cleaner
Pros: Quiet, effecient. We bought this unit to replace a Honeywell unit that served us well for about 20 years. This one is much lighter and easier to move around and it does the job well.
Weaknesses: This baby is U G L Y. Looks like it belongs in a hospital room. What poor packaging for an otherwise well-engineered unit. I’ll build a hardwood cover to slide over the top %26 lv the ends open.
We have had duct-type “whole house” Honeywell units in our last 4 homes and firmly believe in the technology….ignore the diatribe, read the “hard” data/specs. I install them myself as I used to be in the AC business. We also use a portable high-voltage electrostatic device (such as this Fredrich) in the Master BR so that when the neither the house heater nor AC are running; e.g., in the Spring or Fall, our sleep area is still having its air cleaned at least. Honeywell quit making the portable units, so we bought the Friedrich and, though it is ugly, it works as advertised.Ed S in TX

This machine uses the Electronic method of cleaning the air. Unfortunately, this emits ozone into your indoor air. For some reason the EPA hasn’t put a stop to this. They say that the amount of ozone these types of machines (the Sharper Image purifiers use the same technology) emit is negligible. But, one day with this and my husband (who normally doesn’t have allergies or asthma problems, it’s me) was complaining of a sore throat and nasal blockage. He was sick for a week after turning off this purifier. The ozone these units emit when it is acceptable when allowed to dissipate on it’s own. But indoor ozone doesn’t dissipate on it’s own, it builds up and builds up, and when it comes in contact with certain chemicals (like pine cleaner or furniture polish) it can turn into formaldehyde, a known carcinogen.
Beware of these types of cleaners if you have breathing problems.
